The primary objective of a Tour Director is to provide for every guest a relaxing, worry-free, travel adventure and vacation experience they will remember for a lifetime.
Tour Directors oftentimes work as independent contractors, or ‘freelancers’ as does Steve. They are much like the conductor of a symphony. Only after tour operators, or a consultant like Steve have carefully – and artfully – planned a multi-day, or multi-week tour to places many travelers have only dreamt of visiting, and all the arrangements for transportation, dining, lodging, sight-seeing, tours of cities, museums and historic sites, and visits to scenic highlights are in place, does the tour director step to the podium to conduct.
Tour Directors manage a detailed schedule and all the logistics of moving a group tour from place to place, day-after-day. They provide informative, thoroughly researched commentary along the route. Like a stage actor, they calmly ad-lib when things don’t go according to plan, handling unpredictable contingencies when they occur; getting the tour back on schedule without missing a note. For their client, they are the quality control expert and contract compliance officer.
Guests traveling with Steve have often observed that the job of a Tour Director requires they hold a Shepard’s cane in one hand, and a whip in another! That’s sometimes true, and a good motto when traveling with a group is, “expect change — you won’t be disappointed.”
